PTIN and ME: New Rules; New Duties; New Questions

Everyone’s wondering how much the proposed PTIN rules will affect retirement plan practitioners. The answer is: A LOT, because the online preparer tax identification number is just the tip of a regulatory iceberg which could easily sink the unwary practitioner. In the midst of uncertain rules, designed for other tax preparers, retirement plan practitioners will do what they’ve always done: adjust, adapt, and move forward.

This special seminar, one hour of which will qualify for ethics credit for ASPPA and other professional organizations and for ERPA designees, will explore the new rules in detail and examine what they will mean to the average practitioner.

Scheduled topics include:

  • PTIN purpose
  • New PTIN rules and fees
  • Practice before the IRS
  • Form 2848 authorization
  • Professionals who can represent taxpayers
  • The new registered tax return preparer designation
  • Testing and continuing education requirements
  • Comparison with ERPA designation
  • Phase-in of rules
  • Circular 230 standards of conduct
