Advanced Plan Design and Cross-Testing Workshop

A successful retirement plan is about more than just the selection of good investment options or an intuitive website. Helping plan sponsors to create and successfully operate the best plan for their needs is where art and science intersect. And to really do it right – to help find and operate the best plan design for your clients – requires more than understanding the general concepts. Certainly, you have to know the rules. But you also have to know how they work together, and how they can be made to work to get the job done. Our Advanced Plan Design and Cross-Testing Workshop will help the intermediate to experienced retirement plan practitioner comprehend today’s most popular plan design alternatives and know when and how to apply them in a particular situation.

This seminar highlights the practices (some counterintuitive) that experience demonstrates are helpful in maintaining a successful retirement plan, along with an in-depth review of cross-testing topics. By the end of the seminars, attendees will have the knowledge to cross-test a plan by hand; knowledge that is highly useful, even when using software for testing.

Topics include:

  • Detailed review of general nondiscrimination testing
  • Troubleshooting cross-tested plans
  • Component plan restructuring
  • Strategies to motivate employees to defer
  • Triple stacked match and cross-tested plan design
  • Cross-tested safe harbor 401(k) plan design
  • Effective use of options for eligibility, vesting, and other issues

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the Workshop, an attendee should be able to:

  • Alternative approaches to maximum contributions while controlling costs
  • Recognize the flexibility in using a plan design which places each participant in his/her own classification
  • Design a safe harbor 401(k) plan design with a triple stacked match design
  • Design an effective corrective amendment if cross-tested plan fails nondiscrimination testing
  • Make cost-effective use of imputed disparity and the general test
  • List approaches to encourage employees to defer
