More and more qualified plan administrators find themselves being brought into the 403(b) market place and the rollout of pre-approved 403(b) plan documents is only going to increase their popularity. While there are many similarities between 403(b) and 401(k) plans, there are also several profound differences that are traps for the unwary 401(k) practitioner. This workshop series is designed for 401(k) practitioners who would like to better understand 403(b) plans. It builds on the knowledge you already have, to help you effectively advise clients and keep 403(b) plans running properly. If you work primarily with 403(b) plans and would like to develop a better understanding of the rules, this workshop offers a careful explanation of the 403(b) requirements.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the Workshop, an attendee should be able to:

  • Determine which employers can sponsor 403(b) plans
  • Advise 403(b) sponsors regarding available investment options
  • Determine whether a 403(b) plan is subject to ERISA
  • Understand the consequences of a 403(b) plan being subject to ERISA
  • Understand the written plan requirements which apply to 403(b) plans
  • Assist 403(b) sponsors in dealing with exchanges and transfers
  • Correctly apply the universal availability rule
  • Understand the unique applications of 403(b) to the limits of Code §415
