Description
This is the ninth segment of the 12-session Web seminar series, “Fundamentals of 401(k) Plans.” For more information about the series and how to order all 12 sessions at a discounted price, click here.

While each session is sold on a “stand-alone” basis, some sessions do build on others. Please refer to the “Prerequisites” below for guidance. All sessions will be recorded and available for purchase. Due to the inability to track attendance, however, a Letter of Participation is not provided for recorded events. ****************************************************************

An employer’s primary concern with a 401(k) plan is whether its contributions will be deductible in the year contributed. Section 404 of the Code provides an annual deduction limit. This program discusses how much is deductible and the consequences of contributing a nondeductible contribution to a 401(k) plan.

Additionally, section 415 of the Code places a cap on the amount of annual additions that may be contributed to a participant’s retirement account. This year the 415 limit is $50,000. Many unique retirement plan features are designed around the 415 limit. This also discusses the 415 limit.

What you'll learn:

  • Participants used in deduction limit
  • Participant compensation
  • Excess nondeductible contributions
  • Excise tax
  • 415 Limits
  • Annual additions
  • Impact of corrective contributions
  • Contribution timing
Prerequisites: The presentation will assume attendees have a basic familiarity with the operation of 401(k) plans. While there are no prerequisites or other advanced preparation, a new practitioner will benefit by attending Fundamentals 8: Compensation to understand the intricate details of how 415 compensation is defined.
